Foot Biomechanical Assessment

Foot Biomechanical Assessment

Sky Podiatry provides Foot Biomechanical Assessment

Abnormal foot biomechanics is a great contributing factor in the development of pain and injury in the feet, ankles, knees, and legs. At Sky Podiatry, our podiatrists are highly skilled and trained in providing a foot biomechanical assessment to detect biomechanical abnormalities that may be the cause of your pain or may predispose you to injury.

During a Foot Biomechanical Assessment, we take a whole approach to look at how your body moves and counteracts for any irregularities. Such as foot structure, the wear and tear to your shoes, weight transfer whilst walking and the presentation of pain. The information gained from the foot biomechanical assessment helps our podiatrist to recommend the most effective treatment plan to combat your specific problem. Through this individualised approach to assessment and treatment, our clients are provided with effective and targeted treatments that prompts recovery from injury and relief of painful symptoms.

What does a foot biomechanical assessment involve?

  • Alignment of the foot, ankle, knee, and leg

  • Visual gait analysis – using slow motion video analysis

  • Pressure plate mapping of your feet both standing and while walking

  • Joint flexibility including screening for joint hypermobility

  • Foot and leg muscle strength testing – to detect muscle imbalances and weakness

  • Balance and pelvic stability tests

  • Screening for limb length discrepancy

Our podiatrists are trained to detect and find tailored solutions to treat biochemical problems that cause injury, pain, and disability. By identifying and improving your biomechanics, our podiatrists can support you in returning to your chosen exercise or sporting activities, enhance your athletic performance, and most importantly, reduce the risk of injury recurrence.

Motion Analysis

During the assessment your biomechanics in motion are analysed using highly effective gait analysis software, using a treadmill pressure plate technology to watch your unique walking, and running pattern. The digital camera uses freeze-frame analysis of specific points in the gait cycle.

Your podiatrists will then analyse the:

  • Degree of supination of the foot at contact,

  • The degree of pronation during stance,

  • The timing of pronation and the degree of re-supination at toe off.

This information is important in defining the causes of injury. These causes are typically a combination of factors, including poor flexibility, strength, and the misalignment of the foot or lower leg. Once your podiatrist examines the information gained from the foot biomechanical assessment, they will be able to design a treatment plan to treat your unique injury. Your treatment plan may include:

Pressure Plate Technology | Pressure Mapping

At Sky Podiatry, we utilise state-of-the-art Sensor Medica pressure plate technology when undergoing biomechanical assessments. This technology focuses on biomechanical analysis and relies on a variety of tools, like force plates, motion capture, EMG systems, and pressure measurement to gather objective information during assessments. This technology also provides us with the ability to segments views by foot, therefore, furthering the analysis into foot function, balance, sway and more.

Orthotic Therapy: Orthotics are individually designed custom innersoles for your shoes that can assist help to correct abnormal foot and leg biomechanics to reduce strain and loaded on affected areas, and to correct posture. Following a biomechanical assessment at Sky Podiatry, we use our state-of-the-art technology to take a 3D digital scan of your feet from which we prescribe and manufacture orthotics to fit perfectly to your feet.

Strengthening and Conditioning: To strengthen and condition the foot muscles, your podiatrist will come but with a plan to heal the muscles through consistent loading. We do this by performing strengthening exercises and do the same exercise over and over again in a controlled way, to teach the body that it is stronger than what is perceives itself to be, and that this continued strain applied will cause the body to adapt. The body will then realise that the work is not going away and that the tissue will begin to strengthen, and the body will start to repair.

Adjunctive Therapies: We offer education and onward referral for adjunctive treatments including:

  • Dry needling

  • Shock-wave therapy

  • Corticosteroid’s injections

  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections

It is important to note that these adjunctive therapies all provide short-term relief from foot pain, and that we aim to get the core down pact, and then we can add in these additional treatments to improve the speed of recovery.
