Shockwave Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis
Shockwave Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis
Shockwave therapy is an adjunctive therapy and is recommended for chronic soft tissue injuries, particularly for patients that have not responded to typical conservative treatment, such as strength and conditioning, supportive footwear, and orthotics for example.
It is important to mention that shockwave therapy for plantar fasciitis, and other chronic issues should only be performed with additional treatments. At Sky Podiatry, we offer shockwave therapy as a value adding service to help reduce pain immediately and increase the rate of tissue repair.
Shockwave therapy for plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendon pain
Plantar fasciitis and chronic Achilles tendon pain are the most researched and commonly treated conditions with shockwave therapy.
Shockwave therapy for plantar fasciitis and chronic Achilles tendon pain is only considered along with other options, including footwear, strength and conditioning and orthotics and offloading.
How does shockwave therapy work?
Shockwave therapy delivers low and high energy acoustic sound waves to the injured tissue through a hand-held probe. The acoustic sound waves activate the body’s healing process to reduce pain by:
● Increasing metabolic activity through improved blood circulation and the formation of new blood vessels.
● Stimulating the nerves to help decrease the sensitivity in the area of pain.
● Nurtures and increases the rate of the healing process through cell regeneration, and collogen synthesis.
● Breaks up calcification within the tendon which is reabsorbed by the body.
● Has an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect.
Shockwave therapy for plantar fasciitis is non-invasive, and highly effective. It does not require anaesthesia and has zero size-effects. It is relatively pain-free, and you can return to your usual day-to-day activities right after your treatment. The treatment is cumulative, meaning it effects build up over time. Most people will need three to five sessions, however in many cases, one session is enough to considerably reduce pain.
Depending on the severity of your condition, you may be able to continue to exercise while undergoing treatment.
What is shockwave therapy used for?
As mentioned, shockwave therapy is an adjunctive treatment that should only be performed after all other pain management options. At Sky Podiatry, we use shockwave therapy for plantar fasciitis treatment and management after pain resolution fails using traditional treatment and management. We have also found that shockwave therapy is a useful treatment for:
● Heel pain and heel spurs,
● Arch pain
● Bursitis,
● Tendonitis and tendinopathies
● Synovitis
● Metatarsalgia
● Non-healing stress fractures
We can also vary the intensity and spread of the soundwaves to target muscle pain and promote healing of tendons and ligaments.

As mentioned, shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment. You may experience some discomfort during treatment, depending on the level of pain that you are already experiencing in the area. The duration of treatment is about five minutes, so most people are able to tolerate this discomfort.
Most people experience immediate relief following treatment. Although, within two to four hours after treatment, you may experience some soreness in the treated area.
