Four Steps to a Successful Treatment Plan
Commonly asked questions.
Four Step Approach (Education, Offload, Rebuild and Accelerate)
By following these steps in order, you're on a path to a smoother recovery, and we're here to guide you at every stage. Your well-being is our primary concern, and we're committed to helping you achieve the best possible outcome.
Step 1: Understanding Your Condition (Education)
At Sky Podiatry, our priority is to ensure you have all the information you need. Take some time to understand your condition, what's causing it, and the treatment options available to you. Knowledge is empowering, and it'll help you make informed decisions about your care. Remember, we're here to support you every step of the way.
Step 2: Enhancing Comfort (Offloading)
Now that you have a better grasp of your condition, let's focus on improving your comfort. In the "Offload" phase, we often recommend orthotic devices customized just for you. These will help your body work more efficiently, reduce strain, and promote a sense of relative rest. This is a crucial step to minimize discomfort and support your body's natural healing process.
Step 3: Regaining Strength and Mobility (Rebuilding)
As you start feeling more comfortable, our next goal is to help you regain your strength, stability, and mobility. In the "Empowering Daily Functionality" phase, we aim to get you back to handling your daily tasks with ease. We may even suggest you see specialized practitioners like physiotherapists and exercise physiologists who are experts at optimizing your daily functionality. This step is all about improving your overall well-being.
Step 4: Speeding Up Recovery (Accelerate)
Finally, in the "Accelerate" phase, we'll work on speeding up your recovery and reducing any remaining discomfort. This may involve treatments like shockwave therapy and other options. Our main priority here is to ensure you heal quickly and experience relief from any lingering pain.
Education
At Sky Podiatry, we are dedicated to empowering you with knowledge. Our podiatrists will ensure you understand your condition, its underlying causes, and the available treatment options, so you can make informed decisions about your care. Your well-being is our foremost concern, and we're here to support you every step of the way.

When your body is injured, it means that the stress placed on your body has exceeded its capacity to handle it. This situation can be likened to a delicate balance between the demands of your activities (the "stress" part) and your body's ability to manage that stress without harm (the "capacity" part).Tissue stress can occur for various reasons. It may happen when you push your body too hard without allowing it to adapt and recover adequately. Poor exercise or sports technique and underlying factors like muscle imbalances or inadequate conditioning can also contribute. The way your foot, lower limb, and body move is a critical factor in tissue stress. Improper alignment, biomechanical issues, or overuse of certain muscles can influence this stress. Understanding these movement patterns and addressing any abnormalities is essential in managing tissue stress and preventing injuries.
-
The four steps of treatment are important because they contribute to a structured and comprehensive approach to injury management, ensuring the best possible outcome for patients. Here's why these steps hold significance: Education: Understanding your condition and available treatment options empowers you to make informed decisions about your care. Knowledge is the foundation for effective treatment. Offloading: Properly managing tissue stress through offloading not only minimizes discomfort but also significantly reduces stress on the injured area. This reduction in stress plays a pivotal role in fostering a favourable environment for healing. Rebuilding: Restoring strength, stability, and mobility not only increases your capacity for daily tasks but also enhances your body's resilience. By rebuilding these essential elements, we aim to boost your overall capacity to perform activities effectively while minimizing the risk of future injuries. Accelerate: Expediting recovery and reducing pain is vital for a swift return to normal activities. Utilizing various treatments and therapies, such as shockwave therapy, helps achieve this goal.
-
If your treatment plan isn't progressing as expected, here are some steps to consider:
Seek Further Education: If you're unsure about the treatment process or the importance of each step, ask for more information and clarification.
Persistent Pain: If your pain hasn't improved despite maintaining your current activity level (Load), additional offloading strategies may be required.
Returning Symptoms: If you experience a resurgence of symptoms when resuming sports or daily activities, it's time to focus on increasing your body's capacity.
Time Constraints or Stagnation: If you have a tight timeline or your symptoms have plateaued, discuss the possibility of expediting the treatment process with your healthcare provider.
-
Effective injury management encompasses three essential pillars: pain management, performance optimization, and injury prevention. Pain management ensures that individuals can recover comfortably and swiftly. Performance optimization aims to rebuild strength, stability, and mobility, empowering individuals to regain their full functionality. Finally, injury prevention strategies are crucial for minimizing the risk of future injuries, enabling individuals to stay active and pain-free in the long term. These three pillars work in harmony to support overall well-being and athletic success.

Offloading
In the "Offload" phase of our approach, our primary objective is to use orthotic devices to bring the body into a state of improved efficiency and relative rest. Orthotic devices are customized to each patient's unique needs, allowing for better alignment and reduced strain. This approach fosters relative rest, enabling the body to function more effectively while minimizing discomfort and facilitating the healing process.
-
An orthotic device is a specialized insert or appliance designed to be worn within your shoes. Its primary function is to enhance your body's efficiency by bringing it closer to a state of equilibrium or homeostasis. By providing support, stability, and improved alignment, orthotic devices work in harmony with your body, allowing it to function optimally and maintain balance during daily activities, ultimately promoting comfort and well-being.
-
Relative rest refers to a state where the body experiences reduced stress or workload in a specific area or system while still allowing for controlled and limited activity. It's a concept often employed in injury management and rehabilitation.
In the context of healthcare and injury recovery, relative rest doesn't mean complete inactivity or immobilization, which could lead to muscle atrophy or other issues. Instead, it involves modifying activities to minimize the strain on the affected area while still allowing for controlled movements or exercises that support healing. The goal is to strike a balance between providing the body with the opportunity to recover and maintaining overall function. It's a tailored approach that varies depending on the specific injury or condition and its severity.
By enhancing the efficiency of the body, we can guide it toward a state of relative rest.
-
Actual rest refers to a complete and unbroken period of physical inactivity or minimal activity. During actual rest, the body experiences a significant reduction in movement, exertion, or workload. This state typically involves lying down or sitting in a relaxed position, with minimal or no engagement in physical tasks or activities. Actual rest is often necessary for recovery, allowing the body to heal, repair, and recharge, especially after intense physical exertion, illness, or injury. Add a sentence of why actual rest should be avoided if possible.
While actual rest can be crucial for recovery in certain situations, it should be avoided if possible, for extended periods because prolonged inactivity can lead to muscle atrophy, reduced cardiovascular fitness, joint stiffness, and other potential negative impacts on overall health and well-being. It's important to strike a balance between rest and appropriate physical activity to maintain optimal physical and mental health.
Rebuilding
In the "Rebuilding" phase, the role of strength and conditioning is paramount. Once we've granted your body a period of relative rest through our offloading techniques, the next crucial step is to restore resilience to the tissues that have endured prolonged strain. This is where strength and conditioning exercises come into play – these exercises, often associated with the work of physiotherapists and exercise physiologists, are instrumental in rejuvenating your body's capacity to perform.
-
Regrettably, after a period of rest or injury, your body's capacity begins to decline, much like what happens when you neglect regular physical fitness. Without consistent engagement with these exercises, your body's capacity for work diminishes over time. Consequently, your body may struggle to tolerate the additional workload you're seeking to undertake.
Within our four-step treatment plan, when we talk about offloading the body, we're not merely providing relative rest but rather optimizing your body's efficiency in movement. Now, our goal is to fine-tune your tissue's capability and capacity for work. We achieve this by fostering strength and conditioning in these tissues, encouraging the formation of robust collagen within tendons, enhancing muscle strength and fitness, and improving joint mobility. This comprehensive approach ensures your body can not only tolerate increased demands but thrive in performing them efficiently and without discomfort.

Accelerate
Now that we have deepened your comprehension, alleviated the load on your body by enhancing efficiency, and commenced the process of tissue rebuilding, we can turn our attention to acceleration. In this phase, our primary focus is to expedite your recovery and alleviate pain. We provide a range of treatments and therapies, including in-house shockwave therapy and other suitable options, all aimed at ensuring your swift healing and effective pain relief. Your well-being remains our utmost priority throughout this journey.

Sky Podiatry offers shockwave therapy, a non-invasive treatment for chronic soft tissue injuries like plantar fasciitis and heel pain. This therapy utilizes acoustic sound waves to boost blood circulation, nerve stimulation, tissue healing, and the breakdown of calcifications, ultimately improving and accelerate treatment outcomes in combination with Education, Offloading and Rebuilding protocols. While potential side effects are rare and temporary, patients with pacemakers, tumors, acute plantar fasciitis, blood clotting disorders, or recent cortisone injections should avoid it. Typically, three to five sessions are recommended, with minimal discomfort during the five-minute treatment, and most individuals can resume regular activities immediately afterward. Sky Podiatry employs the EMS Dolorcast® Radial Shock Waves machine, ensuring high-energy delivery for exceptional and lasting results.

While Sky Podiatry does not offer Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy directly, we acknowledge it as a valuable treatment option for various conditions, including chronic soft tissue injuries such as plantar fasciitis and heel pain. In PRP therapy, a patient's own blood is processed to concentrate platelets, which are then injected into the affected area to accelerate healing and improve treatment outcomes. This regenerative treatment option has minimal side effects and is particularly effective for patients seeking a natural alternative. It's not recommended for individuals with certain medical conditions, and the number of sessions may vary based on the severity of the condition. Patients can typically resume their normal activities shortly after the procedure. At Sky Podiatry, we prioritize your comfort and can provide guidance on considering PRP therapy as part of your comprehensive treatment plan.
-
While Sky Podiatry primarily focuses on podiatric care, we do not typically recommend cortisone injections as a primary treatment option.
